Sphinx of Uthuun is tough to beat resource-wise if you have a blink or recursion engine going.īeen theorycrafting/deckbuilding/testing and playing a stax list recently. Gaea's Cradle, Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Earthcraft, and Black Market all generate insane amounts of mana.īuried Alive can give you insane value for its cost if you time it right or set it up properly. Genesis Wave, Epic Experiment, Sphinx's Revelation, and Villainous Wealth can be insane with enough mana.ĭark Prophecy and Baleful Force are extremely powerful, yet extremely risky draw engines. Universal recursion can also get back your highest-value cards, making it extremely high-value as well:Īdd Nature's Spiral and Creeping Renaissance to that list in the right deck. Most green draw is insane if you build around it. Are you familiar with any other cards that generate massive amounts of resources like these? Mana Reflection is excellent at generating mana and Land Tax is excellent at drawing, well. I've also seen Manabarbs deal triple digits worth of damage in a single game. Which cards frequently generate a preposterous amount of resources for their cost, be it cards, mana, life, or anything else? Rhystic Study comes to mind as an inexpensive example of a card worth significantly more than its cost. What I would actually like to discuss are the cards that you believe are the Recurring Insights of Commander. Roasting the Robot was not my intention in creating this thread though. When I am able to cast a six mana card that typically functions as double Tidings or better, how can I possibly justify including a card like Solemn Simulacrum in my deck, which draws me just one? Obviously, Sad Robot is worth the sum of its parts and not just the "leaves the battlefield" trigger, but just how valuable is that sum? Rampant Growth + Reach Through Mists + Whitesun's Passage may be a fair return for four mana, provided that Solemn is chump-blocking what effectively amounts to five damage, but the combined resource development that it produces doesn't hold a candle to a card like Recurring Insight. It seems to me that, in Magic, there exists a number of cards like the aforementioned Recurring Insight that are capable of generating massive amounts of resources (in this case cards) with little to no energy required on behalf of the caster. Cards like Recurring Insight, while having always been an obviously powerful card, are powerful from a deckbuilding perspective because they afford their caster deck slots which can be dedicated towards inexpensive, in place of running more cards that at a lower quantity. I'm beginning to value cards in Commander much higher than I used to that are capable of earning massive amounts of card advantage independently. Quote from arrogantAxolotl »I feel as though the number of cards that a player can afford to dedicate towards spot removal or other kinds of inexpensive reactive cards depend on how reliably that player can achieve.
